Weekend Walk in the Walled City

Last Sunday, my friends and I had a rather spontaneous walk in one of the most visited places in Manila. In my eight years of stay in the metro, I have never been to Intramuros and I have always been curious of this historical and century-old tourist destination in the heart of the city. Intramuros in Latin means "within the walls". The "Walled City" used to be the seat of the Spanish government when Philippines was still a colony of Spain. The walls were built in the 16th century to protect the city from foreign invasions. I just can't help but be amaze at this sturdy structure that has survived wars and natural disasters for hundreds of years. The walls are so thick you can actually walk on top of them. There are more to explore inside the walls like old streets and buildings that hold so much history. You can read more about Intramuros here.

It is nice to see that there are efforts to preserve our country's historical sites. I believe that the Spanish colonial period, though one of  most trying times in our history, has greatly shaped our identity as a nation. And if you want to see how Manila was like back in the day, it would be great to pay Intramuros a visit once in a while. It is truly worth one's afternoon/time.
